Innoculation and what to bring
Vaccinations
You should ask at your surgery what innoculations are recommended for travel to Antigua. The main one recommended on the webpage
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/travel/caribbean/antigua_barbuda.shtml
is Hepatitis A, which should be done two weeks before travel.
What to bring:
- A Bible, pen and notebook for keeping a retreat journal
- Summer clothes plus one fleece/cardigan, just in case. A couple of shirts with collars would be useful if the back of your neck needs protection from the sun. You don’t need anything smart.
- Beach things (the house will provide swimming towels). A couple of pareos/sarongs would be useful – one for lying on and one for wearing/changing under. Maybe swimming shoes.
- A sun hat which protects the back of your neck, high-factor sun-screen and after-sun cream
- Comfortable sandals – and trainers if you intend to do much walking. The floors are tiled, so you may wish to bring slippers – please don’t bring clackety heels!
- A walking stick, if you ever use one.
- Mosquito repellant and after-bite cream, plus an electric anti-mosquito gadget for your room. The ones which vaporise a bottle of anti-mosquito liquid are particularly effective.
- Electrical sockets are of the American variety with two flat pins parallel to each other, so you will need an adaptor for anything electrical. The sockets in the bedrooms are 110v but there are some 220v ones in the house. A battery charger may not work on 110v, so bring plenty of spare batteries for cameras etc. It is a photogenic place, so pack enough films / camera cards.
- You will need to bring your own laptop if you wish to access the internet. There is wifi in the house.
- Any medication you are likely to need – and please bring extra, in case of any unforeseen delay.. Please remember to pack anything important in your hand-luggage, unless it is a liquid in excess of 100ml.
If you are bringing a mobile, please make sure that international roaming is enabled – and remember that you will incur international charges for incoming as well as outgoing calls.
The currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, but US dollars are also widely accepted for all but small purchases. We do not advise bringing travellers' cheques as it is difficult to find places to change them.
